Green Canyon or the open sea?

Green Canyon is not a canyon you paddle through. It is the reservoir behind the Oymapınar dam, a long lake of turquoise water between limestone walls about forty minutes from Side. The boat is a large, shaded double-decker; the day has lunch on board and two or three swim stops. The water is mountain-fed and noticeably colder than the sea, even in August. It is the calm option: no waves, no seasickness, and easy for grandparents and small children.

The Dolphin Island trip leaves from the harbour and follows the coast to bays for swimming, with lunch on board and a foam party on deck. It is louder, warmer and more of a beach-club day on the water. On a windy day the sea can be choppy.

The Green Lake day combines a shorter boat ride on the lake with a cabrio bus through the mountain villages and a stop at the lakeside restaurant. It is the gentlest of the three and a good first day out.

Which one to book

Families with young children and anyone who prefers still water: Green Canyon. Groups in a party mood: Dolphin Island. Couples who want scenery and a relaxed pace: Green Lake, or the Green Canyon jeep tour that adds the boat trip to a safari day.

What to bring

Swimwear under your clothes, a towel, sunscreen and a hat. Drinks on board are usually paid separately, so carry some cash. Take a light cover-up for the boat's shaded deck; the breeze on the lake feels cooler than the beach.
