Inside Pirates' Cave: Alanya's Smugglers' Hideout by Boat

📅 June 15, 2026

The Sea Cave You Can Only Reach by Boat

Pirates' Cave opens at the base of the cliffs on the seaward side of Alanya's castle peninsula, just above the waterline. There is no path down to it, no road and no ticket booth. The only way in is across the water, which is exactly what made it useful to the people it is named after. Boats throttle down as they approach, and for a few minutes the engine noise gives way to the slap of waves against rock and the cool air drifting out of the dark mouth of the cave.

The Corsair Legend

The name comes from a long-standing local story: pirates working this stretch of the Mediterranean are said to have used the cave to stash plundered goods and to hide captives out of sight of the castle garrison above. Whether every detail holds up to scrutiny matters less than what the setting makes obvious. Tucked beneath sheer rock, invisible from the land approaches and screened from passing ships, the cave is a near-perfect place to disappear with something you would rather no one saw.

What You Actually See

Don't expect a walk-through attraction. From the boat you look into a shadowed chamber where the sea pushes in and out; captains hold position at the entrance so you can take it in and photograph the play of light on the water. The real reward is the surrounding water itself, which runs clear and deep blue against the pale cliffs.

  • The cave mouth: a dark opening at the waterline, best seen as the boat idles close to the rock.
  • Clear swimming water: tours usually anchor nearby so you can swim in calm, transparent shallows.
  • Cliff scenery: the peninsula's limestone walls rise straight from the sea, with the castle high above.
  • The cave circuit: Pirates' Cave is paired with the Phosphorescent Cave, Lovers' Cave and the Maiden's Cave on the same loop.
  • Photo angles: the contrast of dark cave, bright cliff and turquoise water makes for strong shots.
Pro tip: Sit on the shaded side of the upper deck and keep your camera ready before the boat reaches the cave, the captain rarely pauses for long, and the best light on the entrance lasts only a minute or two.

Getting There & Planning Your Visit

You reach Pirates' Cave on a boat tour leaving from Alanya harbour, below the castle. Most peninsula trips run as a half-day or full-day loop that takes in the four caves plus swim stops in the bays. If you are flying in, Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport (GZP) is about 35 km away and Antalya Airport (AYT) roughly 120 km to the west. Bring water, sun protection and swimwear under your clothes so you are ready when the boat anchors. Morning departures tend to be calmer on the water and quieter at the swim stops.

Seeing the cave is really about the day on the water around it. Seven Tours runs peninsula boat excursions from Alanya that cover Pirates' Cave and its neighbours with time to swim between stops, so you can settle in for the ride and let the captain handle the rest.

Places to Visit & Recommended Tours

📍 Pirates' Cave (Phosphorus Cave)

Pirates' Cave sits low on the seaward flank of the Alanya castle peninsula, carved into the cliff and reachable only from the water. Local legend ties it to corsairs who used the cave to stash loot and hide captives between raids. Boat tours from Alanya harbour slow as they pass the opening, then usually anchor nearby for a swim in the clear shallows. It forms one stop on the classic peninsula circuit alongside the Phosphorescent Cave, Lovers' Cave and the Maiden's Cave.
